The Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry Customized to Your Unique Needs

At United Implant Dentistry, dental implant treatment is never a one-size-fits-all solution, and neither is dental anesthesia. With close to 35 years of experience restoring smiles with dental implants and experience administering safe sedation dentistry, Dr. Panjali will help you choose the best option to meet your unique needs. Coupled with our expertise and compassionate touch, sedation dentistry helps our team deliver comfortable implant surgery and excellent outcomes!

Oral conscious sedation is customized according to your specific needs and medical history and doesn‘t require injections or needles. Benzodiazepines are a short-acting, everyday type of drug used in oral conscious sedation that helps alleviate various levels of dental anxiety.

You will take one prescribed pill about an hour before your appointment at home, eliminating the need for the drug to take effect at our office. The only downside is that you’ll need to arrange transportation to and from our practice.

As the weakest type of sedation dentistry, nitrous oxide is typically reserved for less complex procedures such as bone grafting and mild cases of dental anxiety. Commonly known as laughing gas, the odorless gas is mixed with pure oxygen and breathed in through a small mask that fits over your nose.

Within a minute of breathing in nitrous oxide, you’ll experience a pleasant feeling of giddiness or euphoria, with any dental-related worries fading away. Once your procedure is complete, we turn off the nitrous oxide, and breathing in pure oxygen effectively purges it out of your system within a few minutes with little to no side effects.

IV sedation in Cicero, NY, is an ideal dental anesthesia option for full-mouth dental implants or moderate to severe dental anxiety. IV sedation involves sedative medication administered intravenously in liquid form through an IV placed in a vein in your arm or hand. The sedative works by blocking areas of your brain that are tied to sensations of discomfort, pain, and anxiety.

While you may nod off into a light sleep, we can easily awaken you and communicate throughout your dental implant procedure. Dr. Panjali and our team carefully monitor all your vitals to ensure your safety. Due to the drug’s amnesiac effects, you likely won’t recall much or anything about your procedure, which is a nice benefit if you have dental anxiety.

Don’t Let Worries Get in the Way of Restoring Your Smile

It’s common for people with tooth loss to be embarrassed at the thought of sitting in the dental chair and confessing about neglecting their smile gaps or admitting that less-than-ideal oral hygiene led them to this point. But the best way to overcome a bad history of dental care and avoid periodontitis, further tooth loss, and other physical and emotional repercussions is to schedule a free implant consultation without delay.

Dental implant surgery itself is less traumatic than you’re likely imagining, while sedation anesthesia enables you to get your smile restored in a stress-reduced state. Making the important decision to do something proactive about your gapped smile will ultimately benefit your oral health and overall well-being now and for decades to come!

How to Prepare for a Procedure with Sedation Dentistry

During your initial visit with Dr. Panjali, we encourage you to discuss your feelings and preferences openly. For example, a bad past dental experience or a dislike of needles may have contributed to your dental anxiety and/or preconceived notions about dental anesthesia. Dr. Panjali will discuss the different options, including how different dosages can control the strength of your sedation and the stringent safety measures we follow to ensure your safety.

Certain factors, such as preexisting medical conditions, allergies, and current medications, can influence your eligibility for sedation dentistry. As such, before considering any form of sedation at United Implant Dentistry, discussing your medical history, current medications, and any allergies is crucial for determining the safest option. Even if your medical history makes some types of sedation contraindicated, you may still benefit from other formulations.

Dr. Panjali will provide detailed instructions for surgery and how to prepare for a procedure under sedation. You must also sign an informed consent form indicating your agreement and understanding.

For example, if you’re getting IV sedation, you may be advised not to eat solid foods after midnight or no more than six hours before your procedure, although you may be able to drink clear liquids up to two hours before. Be sure to ask questions if instructions are unclear because your safety is associated with closely following our guidelines.

If you received oral consciousness or IV sedation, you can’t operate a vehicle following discharge from our implant center. In addition to arranging for a responsible adult to provide transportation, your coordination and reflexes can be impaired to some degree up to 24 hours after receiving sedation, so you need to rest and refrain from certain activities.

But if you received nitrous oxide, any side effects are so mild that you can drive yourself home or back to work unless we recommend otherwise based on the type of procedure you underwent.
